Applications regarding our Covid-19 analysis work#

Here you will find some interesting applications as of August 2021. The source code is available on GitHub.

  • CSWebclient 1.3.0
a Windows application to visualize the Covid-19 situation. Just execute ‘Setup.exe* for installation:
    Windows setup/installer

  • MacOS Webclient 1.3.0
a native MacOS application to visualize the Covid-19 situation. Open the DMG and drag the application to the application directory. To start it for the first time you have to right-click the app icon and select execute to approve the application. Afterwards you can start it with the regular double-click. This is the common procedure for none-AppStore applications:
    MacOS DMG installer

Time laps videos about the outbreak#

Some words about so called Heatmaps:
A heatmap transforms a data value into a colour. The range of the value is between a given Minimum and a given Maximum which translates into a colour between blue and red. A blueish colour stands for a value close to the minimum while a redish colour stands for a value close to the maximum. The values in between range from turquoise over green and yellow to an orange and finally to a red like shown in the picture below:

The videos below show such heatmaps for different numbers generated by our Covid-19 analysis and their changes over the time. Keep in mind that for every single date there is a new minimum and maximum being calculated. All maps somehow start in China in red as China was the starting point for the virus. But over the time the situation was changing so that China is slowly moving to blue colours while other countries are getting red.

  • X months with Covid-19 in a time lapse
a series of videos showing a world map to display a heatmap of the distribution of Covid-19 data over the time. There are different playlist such as 10 months with Covid-19 in a time lapse. There are updated once a months and you may look at our channel on YouTube for the latests videos. Here you will find links to the latest videos:

    • Accumulated confirmed cases
      watch on YouTube
Watch out the USA, Brasil and India getting more and more red. They not even have the highest number of infections but also the highest growth. This will of course change the colours of the other countries more to the green. In November you can see the second wave in Europe producing again more red tones.
    • 7-day incidence per 100.000 population
      watch on YouTube
See Europe getting less new infections in mid July (getting green) but a strong growth of new infections starting mid August. America is getting deeper and deeper red starting in July but with the help of the spring/summer season South America is getting back to orange. Asia is often green as it has much more control of the virus as the countries is in the western world.
    • Accumulated confirmed cases per million population
      watch on YouTube
Notice the Swedish way in the mid of June having a big number of infections per population. During the summer Europe became more green as a result of less infections while America became more and more red. South America became deep red even when spring started late September. Europe got a second wave starting end of October, at a time when Asia was already back in green.
    • Case-Fatality-Rate (CFR, percent deaths of confirmed cases)
      watch on YouTube
Notice the strong high number of deaths in Italy early March and the high rates in Sweden in the beginning of the summer. As the CFR is based on the number of confirmed cases it’s obvious that countries that don’t test will show low CFR values. During the year more and more countries intensified testing so that the colours of the countries became more equal.
    • Deaths of confirmed cases per million population
      watch on YouTube
Watch out America (north and south) plus Sweden, France, Spain, Italy, Great Britain and the BeNeLux getting dark red in June. South America became almost completely red by October. Denmark, Norway and Finland had much less deaths per million population as their direct neighbor Sweden.
  • Dynamic plots of Covid-19 data
Animated 2-D plots of some interesting SARS-COV-2 data such as the 7-day incidence and infections per million population during 2020. As the plots are somehow limited if you add too many countries we did this for selected European and Asian countries. Doing this for American countries is some useless as the United States have too high numbers for most of the attributes which will dominate the y scale. All videos cover the time between March 1st 2020 and January 23rd 2021. The x-axis shows a rolling 6-months view of the data while the y-axis shows the data with a dynamic scaling.
